The universe is vast, more vast than the human mind can conceive. And it is also old, impossibly old. The human race has existed for roughly 100,000 years, a blip when compared to the long history of the cosmos. In all that time billions upon billions of years, what other life came into existence? Sure the first intelligent race didn’t just form 100,000 years ago, can’t possibly be the first. If so, who was, and heights did their civilization rise to and where are they now? The Xeelee Sequence by Stephen Baxter is a collection of science fiction books and short stories that follow the history of the cosmos dominated by an elusive race of beings known as the Xeelee. They are an ancient race so advanced that mere scraps of their technology left behind discarded by them could change the trajectory of an entire species. Unbeknownst to humanity, who only saw the Xeelee as a threat and a competitor, the Xeelee had a great mission. Humanity waged a war with the Xeelee that lasted a hundred thousand years but in reality humankind would prove to be no match for the great Xeelee, in reality the Xeelee fought a much greater war. A war for the fate of the universe against entities made of dark matter. These entities form at the beginning of the universe, they lived within stars and consumed them, if these entities won against the Xeelee, the fate of the universe would be darkness. But the Xeelee had a plan, a plan spanning across time, forward and backwards. The AntiXeele was a constructed entity, a being created with the purpose of orchestrating the Xeelee’s great works and seeing it through. Phillip K Dick is an extremely influential Sci-Fi writer in fact, I would say he wrote some of the most influential works to come out of the new wave of the 60s and 70s. He’s most famous among the general public for being the author who wrote the source material for the Bladerunner movie, Do Androids dreams of Electric sheep, which is quite frankly very different and much weirder compared to the movie. I’ve already done a full video on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, but today we’re going to be talking about a much less known story by Phillip K Dick, one that I think has silently influenced a lot of works of science fiction. There are threads of influence in movies like Matrix, and They Live and in other sci-fi that’s obsessed with hidden systems of control, manufactured reality, the mind-breaking idea that the world you experience is actively lying to you. This story appeared in a collection of short stories by Harlan Ellison called Dangerous visions. It included 33 stories by various authors. One was Faith of Our Fathers by Phillip K Dick. This was in 1967 during the New Wave a Sci-Fi, which we’ve dived into a few times on this channel. In short with was a movement within the sci-fi genre which originated in Britain, authors during the new wave began to explore more transgressive topics in sci-fi and push the Genre’s Boundaries, it’s from the New Wave that we get book like Dune, The Left Hand of Darkness, Nova by Samuel R. I recently read Stanisław Lem’s short story Non-Serviam, and what’s interesting about it is that it doesn’t actually argue about whether God exists. It asks something much more uncomfortable. What if God is real, reachable, and perfectly capable of explaining himself, and simply chooses not to. This particular short story can be found in his collection of short stories titled A Perfect Vacuum. Which consisted of reviews of nonexistent books. Non Serviam appears towards the end. Lem presents the story as a dry, fictional academic review of a book on personetics by a man named Professor James Dobb. Personetics, the science of creating sentient beings called personoids within machines. Stanisław Lem himself was not religious and he was openly skeptical of the idea that morality requires a transcendent authority. That position is not hidden or ambiguous in this short story. Lem approaches God as a logical proposition under uncertainty, not as a being owed obedience, love, or gratitude, and he carries that stance straight into the story. The Area X series is one of the most disturbing, and mindbending modern science fiction series. The first book in the series Annihilation was adapted into a movie in 2018 but the book is quite different and more complex compared to the film. There are also three sequels. Authority, Acceptance, and Absolution. Now, I have already done two videos covering the other three books, one of which is over an hour long. You can find those videos linked in the description. This video will mainly focus on piecing together the bits of information and revelations revealed in Absolution and try to understand how it relates to what we’ve read in previous books and how it all can help us understand the nature of Area X and all of the strange and horrific events that occur near and within it. Absolution is split mainly into three parts.
