While I was working on my video about Area X: Absolution, I kept thinking about Roadside Picnic. Certain parts of the Absolution draft broug;;;ht this book back to mind, especially the way both stories deal with strange locations that change the world around them and force people to move through uncertainty without real answers. Going back through my notes made me remember how strong the connection feels, even though the two works are completely separate. That was enough to make me pull the novel off the shelf again and take a closer look at what it actually does, what the story is about, and why it has always felt unsettling. “Roadside Picnic,” by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, was published in 1972, it is a book about what happens after aliens visit Earth and then leave before anyone knows they were here. No one sees the aliens come or go. I said in a previous video that I would go into more detail as to why Artificial tends to turn against us in science fiction, and there are countless examples of this. From the ban on thinking machines in Dune to the rogue AI collective in Hyperion, science fiction literature often portrays artificial intelligences as malevolent, godlike, or destructive. Why is this trope so common? The reason relates to an ancient philosophical concern: the separation of technê (skilled craft) from epistêmê (true wisdom). In Platonic terms, an AI is a mere imitation of a mind. Science fiction often uses Artificial Intelligences as cautionary warnings about intellect unguided by morality. Humanity has always created gods in its own image. At first, they lived in the sky, in distant mountain caves, the blaze of bonfires. Then in scripture. Ancient cultures told stories of night-feeding spirits, but the figure we recognize as the vampire coalesced much later in Eastern and Central Europe. Folklore scholars point to the early 1700s as the moment the “modern” vampire takes shape, during a wave of reported revenants in the Balkans. The term itself likely comes from that region, and local variants like the Romanian strigoi and the Greek vrykolakas show how communities described corpse-like predators that harassed the living, sometimes drinking blood and sometimes devouring flesh. But there is another branch of the vampire that people rarely talk about — the science-fiction vampire. Vampires imagined not as folkloric undead, not as gothic seducers, but as biological or evolutionary phenomena, as predators in space, post-human offshoots of our own species, or alien intelligences that treat humanity as livestock or fuel. We shouldn’t simply ask “What is a vampire?” but, what does a culture need the vampire to be at any given time? What if humanity evolved on a world where the sun never set, and as a result the population evolved nyctophobia (a fear of darkness) so severe that even a few minutes of it could lead to severe psychological distress. In such a world, darkness would be more than an absence of light, it would be an unthinkable terror, a force that could unravel the mind itself. That’s the premise of Asimov’s Nightfall, a story that asks what happens when a world bathed in endless sunlight must face its first true night. Nightfall by Isaac Asimov is interesting because you can read two versions of it. Nightfall was originally published as a short story in 1941 and then later adapted into a novel in 1990 with the help of Robert Silverberg. Both versions have the same premise but differ vastly in scope and character depth. The short story is only about 30 pages long, a good length for a short story, but the novel is easily over 300 pages. Now, the 1941 short story is undoubtedly a classic, and the novel is great in its own right, but it was written fifty years later, at a completely different stage of Asimov's career. Isaac Asimov’s The Last Question feels different from a lot of his other work. It starts with a simple conversation about the future of energy and gradually expands into a story that follows humanity across ages, worlds, and transformations. What begins as a technical problem becomes something far more human, touching on the limits of knowledge, and the limits of understanding. Each step forward raises the same question about what it means to endure and what might exist beyond the boundaries of everything we can measure or control. Arthur C. Clarke was one of the most important science fiction writers of the twentieth century. Along with writers like Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein, Clarke helped shape modern science fiction and gave it a sense of wonder and seriousness. He was more than just a storyteller. He was a futurist and a visionary. Clarke predicted satellite communications long before they became real and often wrote about how technology might change the future. Clarke’s stories stand out because they mix real science with a sense of mystery. He didn’t just write about rockets or computers. He wrote about humanity’s place in the universe and the bigger questions we face. One of my favorite stories of his is The Nine Billion Names of God, first published in 1953. It’s very short, just a few pages, but it has a huge idea at its center. Neuromancer is well accepted as one of the greatest and most disturbing science fiction novels of all time. This is not simply because of outwardly disturbing imagery or scenes that scare you in the typical way, but because of the themes that it presents that more and more echo real life as the decades go on. The term 'novum' was coined by Darko Suvin. A novum is essentially the thing in science fiction that separates the world of the science fiction novel from the world that we live in. It can be argued that the novum in Neuromancer is shrinking as time goes on and has shrunk significantly in the last four decades since the novel was released. That is to say, the world we live in has become closer to the world of Neuromancer since William Gibson originally imagined it. The Word for World is Forest is actually the first book in the Hainish Cycle, which also includes the left hand of the darkness, the dispossessed as well as others. Many have suggested that James Cameron used this book to be one of the influences for Avatar, and while that’s not confirmed, I do think you may see some of the similarities if you read the book. Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Word for World is Forest is, in my opinion, one of her most searing works, it was written in 1972 against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, the story uses the science fiction frame of the Hainish Cycle to interrogate colonialism, ecological destruction, and the transformative corruption of violence. The book centers around a planet newly being colonized by humans. The planet, called Athshe, is mainly covered in dense, vibrant forests, which serve as both the physical environment and the spiritual foundation of the native Athsheans, a small, green-furred people who live in harmony with nature. In 1949, George Orwell published one of the most enduring and chilling works of the 20th century 1984. The book was written in the aftermath of World War II, during a time when the world was reeling from unprecedented violence, mass propaganda, and the rise and fall of authoritarian regimes. Fascism had devastated Europe, and Stalinism was casting a long shadow over the East. Orwell, having witnessed the manipulation of truth and the abuse of power firsthand during the Spanish Civil War and through his criticisms of the Soviet Union, wrote 1984 not just as a warning, but as a desperate cry against a future he feared was already beginning. When we talk about the origins of 1984, it’s tempting to think of it as a completely original, prophetic vision conjured by Orwell alone. But the truth is more nuanced. George Orwell, though a literary giant in his own right, was part of a lineage, a tradition of dystopian writers responding to the political horrors of the 20th century. And one name looms particularly large in that lineage: Yevgeny Zamyatin. Zamyatin was a Russian engineer, naval architect, and writer who, in 1921, penned a dystopian novel called We. Poul Anderson’s Tau Zero is one of the most influential works of hard science fiction ever. It was published in 1970 and was based on his earlier short story “To Outlive Eternity,” it’s a novel that takes real physics—especially relativity—and runs with it to the extreme. Anderson leans hard into scientific accuracy, making the book a standout example of how speculative fiction can stay grounded in actual science. It was written in the 1970s, so not all of the science holds up, believe it or not, our understanding of the universe has changed a lot in the last 55 years but that doesn’t take away from how ambitious and influential the book still is. The plot of Tau Zero follows the journey of the starship Leonora Christine, a colonization vessel tasked with reaching the nearby star Beta Virginis. Crew members, consisting of 25 men and 25 women, are aboard the ship, which is powered by a Bussard ramjet. The crew's journey is subject to the effects of relativity, specifically time dilation. The original mission plan involves decelerating at the same rate during the second half of the journey. However, disaster strikes when the ship passes through a nebula, damaging the deceleration field generators. This is one of the most twisted science fiction stories I’ve read in a very long time, and I don’t say that lightly. It’s disturbing in a way that lingers, not just because of gore or shock value, but because it digs deep into the worst-case scenario of what happens when technology gives us everything we want, immortality, infinite pleasure, endless control, except the freedom to die. The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect is not for everyone. I have never gone back and forth so many times on whether or not to cover a book. Some of the content in the book is very disturbing. It’s violent, perverse, and philosophically relentless. But beneath its grotesque surface is a terrifyingly plausible exploration of humanity in the age of a godlike machine, and the twisted price of a perfectly safe world. I should say, I won’t be describing the most gruesome parts of the story in detail. I understand the purpose of those parts of the book, but they are graphic and quite detailed, in a way that can feel gratuitous. But the science fiction ideas and philosophical implications of this story are too good to be ignored. That’s why I’ve decided to cover this book. Greg Egan’s Diaspora is one of the most ambitious and mind-bending science fiction novels ever published. It came out in 1997 and originally started as a short story called “Wang’s Carpets.” That story ended up as a chapter in the novel. Diaspora is: dense, smart, and way ahead of its time. This is hard science fiction to the core. Egan invents entire new branches of physics. He reimagines life, consciousness, time, space — even what it means to be human. The book doesn’t ease you in. There’s a glossary, invented physics theories like Kozuch Theory, and characters that don’t even have genders. But if you stick with it, what you get isn’t just a story, it’s a look at what the future might actually become. By the year 2975, humanity isn’t one species anymore. It’s split into three groups: Fleshers: The biological humans, including the “statics” (unchanged baseline humans) and all sorts of heavily modified versions — underwater people, gene-hacked thinkers, even “dream apes” who gave up speech to live closer to nature. Gleisners: AIs in robotic bodies that live in space. They care about the physical world and experience time like regular humans. They’re kind of old-school, still sending ships to the stars, trying to build things in real space.
