H.P. Lovecraft needs no introduction; he was a master in the horror genre, and I’ve covered several of his works on this channel. If you check the description, you’ll find a playlist of videos where we explore his work. Lovecraft is arguably one of the most influential authors of all time and certainly the most influential horror author to come out of the 20th century. Some of his well-known works, like The Call of Cthulhu, At the Mountains of Madness, The Dunwich Horror, and The Color from Outer Space, are burned into our collective consciousness and have influenced the horror genre in ways that many don’t realize. In this video, however, we’re going to focus on a lesser-known Lovecraft story, The Horror at Red Hook, and its modern reinterpretation, The Ballad of Black Tom. I should start this by saying that, in my opinion, The Ballad of Black Tom is one of the best modern takes on a Lovecraft story that I have ever read. It adds complexity to the story and its characters, and adds nuance to the horrors that they face in this tale. It refocuses the narrative to deconstruct Lovecraft’s often problematic worldview, and it does so in a graceful, almost elegant way, while still maintaining the sense of cosmic dread and chaos that Lovecraft’s work often evokes. The short story "Bloodchild" by Octavia Butler centers around a young Terran boy named Gan, who lives with his family in a Preserve on an alien world overseen by T’Gatoi, a member of the alien species known as the Tlic. The humans within the preserve live peaceful lives, and are provided for by the Tlic, but at a grotesque cost. Bloodchild was first published in 1984 in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. It later became the title story of her 1995 collection Bloodchild and Other Stories. I’ve already covered Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis Trilogy in these video’s here. Bloodchild was written around the same time and shares some similar themes surrounding the cost humankind might be willing to pay for survival. The long shot hope of the Staircase Project was that by sending Yun Tianming to the Trisolarans, he might somehow obtain critical information about the Trisolarans' society, their weaknesses, or their invasion strategy. Even though Tianming was effectively being sent into enemy territory, the hope was that, as a captured and potentially revived human, he could gather intelligence that would help Earth prepare a better defense or devise a counter-strategy. The Staircase Project was a high-risk, last-ditch attempt to do something, anything, that might offer a glimmer of hope for survival. Even if the project didn’t directly lead to a solution, it was at least an attempt to send a message to the universe that humanity wouldn’t give up without trying every possible avenue. Ultimately the Staircase project does not go as planned. The launched brain falls off course. For Centuries the Staircase Project was thought to be a failure. Until year 7 of the Broadcast Era, a dark time for humankind. In the era Human had been exposed to the wider universe, The world of Trisolaris had already been annihilated, Earth was next. This was of course due to the Dark Forest State of the universe, which rendered the cosmos a hostile place to all intelligent life which revealed itself. Here we learn that at some point the Trisolarans had in fact intercepted the Staircase Project, they found Tianming’s Brain, and rebuilt his body. They had been studying him, learning from him. It was because of his brain that they had been able to pull off the devastating droplet attack, which destroyed the entirety of mankind’s space force. He was also responsible for the boom in art and stories from Trisolaris, much of this had helped to humanize the Trisolarans in the eyes of humankind during the Deterrence Era. Due to Tianming the Trisolarans were able to utilize deception. As the hour grows late for Earth and our Solar system, the Trisolarans out of respect for Tianming allow him to communicate with Cheng Xin. But the communication will be monitored by the Trisolarans. Tianming will not be allowed to tell her anything that could potentially help humanity. The Trisolarans still viewed humankind as a threat and would rather they did not survive. Tianming however still feels resigned to help humankind, and the woman he has always loved from afar, Cheng Xin. In the form of fairytales Tianming would attempt to convey to humanity the secret’s for surviving in the universe, within the Dark Forest. If you’ve heard of HP Lovecraft then you might know about his novella, At the Mountains of Madness. It tells the story of a group of scientists on an expedition in Antarctica, where they discover the remnants of something ancient, and incomprehensible, something not of this earth. HP Lovecrat’s story went on to inspire many works of science fiction, including John Campbell’s “Who Goes There?”, a science fiction horror story about an isolated group of scientists in Antarctica who discover a buried alien spaceship. “Who Goes there?” itself went on to inspire several adaptations, 1951’s The Thing From Another World directed by Christian Nyby and produced by Howard Hawks. 1982’s The Thing, directed by John Carpenter, this is without a doubt the most famous adaptation of this story, and the most famous version of the story in general. Peter Watt’s story however has a take on the story that is different from all the others, It takes place entirely from the perspective of the lifeform itself. Throughout the story you view the world through its alien mind, you listen to its alien thoughts. Stories and their interpretations are born out of the times we live in. The particular society or culture at any given time is going to affect how the same stories are presented. You can trace this story all the way back to Lovecraft and each time that it is presented a unique element is added. This is what we will explore in this video. What Does The Thing Represent? What is the thing? What is each version of this story trying to say and how are they different from each other? The engagement of the United States' in the Vietnam War followed the end of World War II in Asia in 1945. Initially the US had minimal involvement but this would change overtime. Over the following decades the US’s involvement increased dramatically. The height of U.S. military engagement in Vietnam was in the spring of 1969, with nearly 550,000 American troops on the ground in the country. By the time the United States was done, in March 1973, over 3 million American citizens had served in Vietnam. Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein was first published in November of 1959. Since then the book has gone on to be praised by some, and criticized by many for its portrayal and some would say glorification of war and the militarization of humanity. The Forever War by Joe Halderman, written 1974, was created as a response to Starship Troopers. It includes staunchly anti war themes, relating to the pointlessness and cruelty of it all. These were of course not the only two works of science fiction by that time to have themes surrounding warfare and the military. Alfred Bester’s 1956 book “The Stars My Destination” though more of a revenge story involves significant conflict and military elements. HG Wells also included elements of warfare and military style conflicts in his works including his most famous 1898’s War of the Worlds. Phillip Francis Nowlan’s 1928 novel, “Armageddon 2419 AD” explores themes of survival and resistance in a post-apocalyptic world, and the fight against imperialism and colonialism. Joe Haldeman's "The Forever War" drew inspiration not just from earlier science fiction, during and before the New Wave, but also significantly from his own military service.Haldeman was drafted into the United States Army in 1967 he served as combat engineer in the Vietnam War. His time in the military as well as the sense of alienation he experienced upon returning to America was the inspiration for this novel. The Forever War explores the sense of alienation often felt by war veterans upon returning home, and the sense that time is slipping away, that emerges when people spend so much time away from home, protecting the ones they love from a distance, only to come back and realize that the world has moved on without them. Joe Haldeman uses a sci-fi universe, containing elements like time dilation, in order to drive these themes and ideas home. The Forever War is the story of the brutal and long lasting war between Humanity and a race of Alien beings known as the Taurans. The Forever War has long been considered a masterwork of science fiction, and I agree, it deserves its legacy. It is also a highly influential work in science fiction and has left its mark on the genre in a significant way. There are certain aspects of the novel that come across as dated, and we’ll get into those later, but in general the forever war was a great read, and its core ideas are presented very well. The Final Architecture is a space opera by British author Adrian Tchaikovsky , made up of three books. Tchaikovsky in my opinion is one of the stand out sci-fi authors of modern times. His book Children of Time is one of the best books I have ever read, sci-fi or otherwise, and I think that says a lot. I find his work to be incredibly creative as he is able to craft unique and interesting worlds alongside witty and well throughout characters. And also his works tend to be page turners, Children of Time, and Cage of Souls certainly both were. Now the reason I wanted to talk about this series in particular is because it’s the first Space Opera that I’ve read from Tchaikovsky, and the series ends up being somewhat reminiscent of the work of Alestair Reynolds in his revelation space series specifically, though it of course has its own flavor. There are also a couple of elements of this series that remind me of Dune as well, and we will get into those. An unusual thing about this video is that I’m beginning my coverage of this series before finishing the entire series. I’ve done this before, but it’s significant here given how connected the narratives of three books seem to be. There seems to be no question that they are meant to be read as a trilogy and the fundamental mysteries of the series are not solved by the end of book one. Because of this as I go through this video I’ll be giving some of my own ideas and speculation as to what could be going on in the series, and once I finish the entire series, we will see how much I got right. Like the other books I’ve read from Tchaikovsky, the first book in the Trilogy, Shards of Earth, is immediately gripping, in the opening it sets up a fundamental mystery, who/what are the Architects and where did they come from? Humanity had been prosperous before they came, suddenly, though if anyone had been listening to the warning of a mysterious being known as Ash maybe more human life could have been preserved, but we will talk about Ash later. Humanity named their attackers the Architects because in reality they did not destroy, they remade, reconstructed. They came to earth first, remade the world, twisting its form and taking no mind of the life on its surface. The architects were massive leviathans, and nothing could stand against an architect once it approached. The destruction of Earth led to a great human diaspora, mankind fled to many worlds, Like Berlenhof. But the architects would keep coming, reshaping the worlds of humanity. Until one day something unimaginable happened, something, something which seemed to make the architect cease what they were doing and vanish completely. And that thing was, that for the first time in the near century that they had been subjugating the worlds of humanity, they had noticed us. Following the Doomsday Battle in which the Trisolaran droplet laid waste to the entirety of humanity's space fleet, it seemed that all hope had been lost for mankind. But 7 ships had escaped the solar system, fleeing the devastation of the droplet. These orphans of humanity were split into two groups, those who would eventually call themselves Starship Earth comprised of 5 ships, and across the sun heading in nearly the opposite direction, the ships Bronze Age and Quantum. The Vessel Natural Selection had fled the solar system before the battle due to the actions of Zang Behai, who saw escapism as the only hope for humanity's future in the face of the looming Trisolaran threat. 4 ships were sent in pursuit of Zang Behai, but after the Doomsday occurred Zang Behai’s pursuers realized that they could never return to the solar system while the droplet reigned. Their only hope would be to join forces with Zang Behai and the inhabitants of natural selection.
