I feel like I'm always trying to slow down Quinn's videos to read book spines! I'm finishing up Chapterhouse now, and since I've already read the Foundation series, I thought it might be fun to ask for good science fiction/fantasy recommendations a different way.
1. What book do you think would make a great movie and/or series that hasn't had the opportunity yet?
2. What novel on your bookshelf has one of the most memorable endings?
3. What's a great book or series you've received as a gift?
4. Is there a novel that changed your mind about an issue (big or small)?
5. A great book on your shelf that won you over by the end -- though you might not have been sure about it at the onset.
Thanks for opening this forum Quinn!
well, I'm particularly fond of A. Bertram Chandler's Rim Worlds series and I think his John Grimes series (within the Rim Worlds) would make for a great TV show; Grimes out Kirks Kirk when it comes to the ladies, gets into deep doo doo, often owing to the best of intentions, and almost always manages to somehow come out on top.
Childhood's End by Clarke. The Crucible of Time and Total Eclipse by John Brunner.
Tolkein's Lord of the Rings. I got an early Ballentine boxed set
Changed? Maybe Influenced is a better word. Certainly; Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein (and others by the Grand Master); Camp Concentration by Disch; The Iron Dream by Spinrad; Delany's Dhalgren; Pohl and Kornbluth's The Space Merchants; many more
The most recent example of that is The Robots of Gotham by Todd McAulty
Ooo...that's a few new good ones! I've had Dhalgren on a reading list for a minute now, I'll have to up the priority. Stranger in a Strange Land is influential. Great book. I remember trying to describe the plot to a few non-readers and being met with general disgust and confusion. Their loss.
Thanks for the suggestions!
1. Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven and friends - good idea and lots of action. I recall thinking it would need updating re the content but I can't remember why I thought that 2. Pliocene Exile series by Julian May has lots of good endings but my favourite was book 3 (Nonborn King). Admittedly read it ages ago but and hard to know if would have the same impact. Still these and the Galactic Milieu novels could easily go film/series 3. Gift - Amtrak wars by Patrick Tilley, but I recall not really liking the last book in the series. Maybe just read 1-5 and imagine a good ending. 4. Leviathan wakes and series by James S A Corey - had me thinking about a realistic sci fi future for our species (no faster than light travel) 5. Normally its the other way round! Hooked on a book and then feel a bit let down by the end. Is this the time to plug my own novel?? (www.gravitysarrow.com https://getbook.at/GravitysArrow https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50227438-gravity-s-arrow https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/book/17352/Gravitys-Arrow-by-Jack-Mann.html) The feedback is that its slow to get into but works well at the end. Indeed I kind of thought of an ending and worked backwards when I wrote it...
If you're a fan of James SA Corey, I'll definitely be checking out some of your other suggestions! Love that series. Thanks for the recommendations -- including your own! :)
I'd be honoured if you enjoyed any of the above, in particular my own book obviously. Happy reading!
MOVIES
There are hundreds.
Ringworld would make an epic space adventure.
So would the Dread Empires Fall series by Walter Jon Williams.
The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath by Lovecraft would make a really cool fantasy movie. Guillermo del Toro should direct it.
Dead Girls by Richard Calder would make a great anime movie.
MEMORABLE ENDINGS
Dead Girls again
Evolution by Stephen Baxter
